A fresh crop of shitake mushrooms on inoculated logs in the woods.
Fresh shitakes sauteed with butter, garlic and a little white wine - what could be better?
Join us at the Milkweed Mercantile at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage for a Saturday afternoon of mushroom log inoculation* and enjoy the (literal) fruits of your labor for years to come!
Shitake mushrooms, which are delicious AND nutritious, are easily grown. By inoculating logs with mushroom spawn, each log becomes a mini mushroom farm. With proper care, the logs will last on average 4-5 years.

During the workshop each participant will drill holes in 6-8 logs each, fill the holes with shitake mushroom spawn, cover the spawn with beeswax, and then celebrate a job well done with a mushroom-filled lunch. After lunch you and your logs will return home, where you’ll set them up for optimal mushroom growing. In 6-9 months you will be harvesting your own mushrooms!
All of the prep work - the process of harvesting the right kind of logs (species of tree and size of log) prepping the logs, and procuring mushroom spawn, is being done by Mercantile staffers before you arrive. Most tools are provided, along with directions for ongoing care of your logs. Appropriate for those who are 15 or older.
